MARTIANSNAKE'S BIG DISNEY PLATFORM FIGHTER THOUGHT DUMP PROJECT. Part 6:

It is now time to talk television. Specifically, the Disney Afternoon! A programming block with a lot of nostalgia tied to it, enough that a handful of characters originating from it (or simply propped up by it) can feel like obligatory inclusions for big crossovers like a platform fighter.

Looking at things from a realistic POV, a disney afternoon rep fits perfectly in a venn diagram between "obvious inclusion" and "fans will campaign for this character endlessly". Especially the first character I've got lined up...

  • Darkwing Duck - He is the terror that flaps in the night! He is the Yellow Devil that interrupts your fight! He is Darkwing Duck! ahem. A fairly obvious choice, I feel. If you had to pick just one television original character for the game I feel the choice would quickly narrow down to Darkwing and a certain egg-laying mammal of action. His moveset wouldn't be too out there outside of various moves utilizing different types of gas from his Gas Gun. Most applying some sort of status or effect on the opponent.
  • Negaduck - Here's a fun pick. I'm growing rather fond of discussing "parallel characters" for this project, so here's another. Negaduck shares his physical attacks with Darkwing, but most gadget-using moves would be swapped with guns, chainsaws, stuff of that sort. Negaduck's a fun choice for a Roster if you're looking for a slightly deeper cut for the Disney Afternoon, but you don't wanna get too deep or use too much dev time.
  • Goliath (Gargoyles) - So Gargoyles is a popular show, I see it brought up a decent amount in disney platform fighter discussions. Goliath wouldn't be a complicated character gameplay-wise. He's a big heavy hitter with wings and sometimes that's all you need.
  • Baloo (TaleSpin) - Earlier I passed on repping Jungle Book with a character, fully intent on going with the Talespin side of things instead. Baloo would have a few moves/taunts/alts based on jungle book, but the large majority is based around Talespin. A lot of his moveset would revolve around throwing and placing propellers around. These would create windboxs able to push around opponents and recover yourself and allies. I'm rather fond of essentially casting Baloo as some kind of wind elemental for this.
  • Wildwing Flashblade (Mighty Ducks: the Animated Series) - Yep, I'm doing it. This bulky character would bring a hockey inspired moveset to the table, along with some much needed EXTREME 90s aesthetic. Mighty Ducks isn't a show with a particularly strong nostalgic following, but look. It's funny. I think it'd be a welcome surprise if presented correctly.
  • And finally, the moment you've been waiting for...
  • Doug (Disney's Doug) - Ah yes, the Cloud of disney platform fighter. I just think it's really really funny to put Doug in a disney game. Disney owns Doug, they gave him a second show, they gave him a movie, they gave him a play in the disney parks. But everyone and their mom associates Doug more with nick, Disney included, probably! I'm gonna be real. I don't have a single gameplay idea for him. I just couldn't resist adding Doug regardless.
And there you have it! Gizmoduck was considered for the longest time, but I just wasn't feeling it in the end. Hope you like my ideas! If you have any thoughts, let me know! Thoughts motivate me.
I'm one of the biggest advocates for series being able to get multiple characters in a crossover game but even I think multiversus does it with their characters too much

With Multiversus being built around the 2v2 mode I actually like that they seemed to add characters based around that

making series with odd numbers of characters stick out even more.

I can see that but in practice it falls flat for me when the game doesn’t really officially pair any characters up or do much with the 2v2 concept besides its gameplay. If just makes me think “wait does Morty really need to be here if Rick is already?” and makes me feel limited about how I can speculate. If they had fully commited to making their characters a tag team and being a sort of KOF style roster only with 2 characters per team I would like it much more.

You gotta remember this is a live service game designed to add new characters rather often. Even if most of the characters are owned by a large parent, you've still gotta negotiate with the individual studios and rights managers atleast. It's easier to use another character from one of the franchises already approved for use, and there's still tons clamoring for characters like Green Lantern, Marceline, Daffy, ETC, ETC.

Also, only two franchises even exceed 2 fighters, it's not that bad.
Possibly one of my weirder takes, but an element I've grown to really like about the first Super Smash Bros. is that - due to the limitations of the N64 sound hardware and the decision to make almost every piece of music in the game a remix - it really feels like the game has its own more unified musical identity in which every "world" fits, rather than just being a collation of different "worlds" into its own through the use of gamerips.

There's probably a ton of reasons why Smash seems to have... lost a little identity over the years, but I think that's a small part of it. Also, Melee's orchestral tracks are fantastic (and I won't deny that in the slightest), but I do think there's a certain... appeal to the first game's sound. Not sure how to put it.
i googled "kermit vs" and the first autofill was "kermit vs starbucks vs hulk" and i'm very disappointed to find out that that's a search for overpriced watch reviews and not a joke death battle parody
